Olive the Jerk 2

Isn't that a damned good news ? The rock scenes of the French underground are doing wonderfully well. There are boiling hot everywhere : in the Ardennes, in the Paris region, in Brittany, in Provence and around the Mediterranean Basin, along the Atlantic coast, in the Center... Since the beginning of the year, some very nice French nuggets have turned around on the turntable. We find them all in this 'France Special' selection, summoning dark-punk, post-punk, cold wave, 50's rock, proto-punk, power-pop, garage-punk, punk-77, synth-punk and emo-post-punk. Some incredibly talented bands, for sure ! Quel plaisir de voir et d'entendre tout cela ! Les scènes de l'underground rock français se portent à merveille. Ça bouillonne de partout : dans les Ardennes, en région parisienne, en Bretagne, en Provence et autour du Bassin Méditerranéen, le long de la façade Atlantique, dans le Centre... Depuis le début de l'année, de très bons disques de rock français sont passé...

'' Oi Oi Oi Oi! Play the third one ! Oi Oi Oi Oi! That's the best of the album! Oi Oi Oi ! '' Yeah ! We did have a good laugh with this anthology scene (translated from the French) from Didier  back in 1997! A time when Oi music was shredded by the parodistic play of the froggie crew of Les Nuls !... With this risky introduction, you might have guessed that this month, we're going to talk about Oi music. But don't worry, the references on the subject won't stop at this movie (fortunately !).  Let's start with a confession: I have more or less given up on it for about fifteen years ago. The fact that I had moved on more garage-punk soundings. And during all this period, the rare new Oi releases I listened to were rarely convincing : much too throaty voices, much too aggressive sonorities, hackneyed clichés on the skinheads way of life, without speaking about this working class pride that was often synonymous of political engagement for many people... ...
